Where I'm Really From

Travel posters that celebrate belonging in the AAPI community. Made at Droga5 NY for the Asian American Federation.

Taking back the question, “No, but where are you really from?”

To raise money for the Asian American Federation, we turned ten Asian American stories into travel posters that appear to depict faraway destinations.

Until a closer look reveals them to be vibrant, personal, and surreal illustrations of the U.S. cities these individuals are really from.

Recognized with a yellow D&AD yellow pencil, a gold One Show pencil & coverage by Comm Arts, It’s Nice That, Creative Review, Muse by Clio, AdWeek, and NBC.

One-of-a-kind travel posters filled with personal easter eggs.

From Olympian Apolo Ohno's Seattle to novelist Kevin Kwan's Houston to hate crime survivor Noel Quintana's NYC, every poster was an American city from an Asian American POV.

Creating the posters was an iterative, highly conceptual process.

We brought our ten illustrators the initial design concepts—then partnered with them over two months to create something special.

The result: intimate portraits of belonging.

Interviewees took back “the question” with badass, vulnerable, and touching portraits—which we shot in their respective neighborhoods.
